This Asian-Australian Digital Nomad
My experience as an Asian-Australian Woman is quite different from many nomads for a number of reasons. Firstly, there are very few nomads who look like me. It is much rarer for an Asian to be living a 'rootless' life.
Why is that, you might wonder?
Well, it goes back to our upbringing. From a young age, we had been taught to study hard, go to a good university, build a stable career, buy a house, get married, grow a good foundation, including a stable home.
Having 'roots' is an important factor for many Asian families, as we have often migrated/moved/fled from our countries of origin. It can be hard to have a sense of security when one doesn't know where their roots/foundations are.
Secondly, travelling as an Asian Woman is often seen as dangerous by many Asian families - I recall when I first lived in Taiwan in my early 20s, the locals were shocked and worried for me. True, being a solo female can be dangerous in some countries, AND the opposite is also true, while travelling smartly and intuitively.
Thirdly, the traditional career is built on being in 1 location for extended periods of time. My father has asked me constantly in the past: "Do you think you take your career seriously?" (despite the fact I'd been a successful Senior Relationship Manager, Strategist and Chief of Staff... story for another time)
So there are many factors that make me a little unique as a digital nomad. I am hopeful that this will change in the coming years as more Asians find their inner courage to live the life that they truly desire.
If you curious about exploring a digital nomadic life and live on your terms, I can guide you.
