What is a coaching container?

Hint: it doesn't always float on water 🌊

Imagine this: you sign up for a full day workshop, feeling exciting about learning this new skill and experiencing something new. You're expecting this to change your work somehow.

Scenario 1:
You rock up to the venue, and there's an empty room. You step out to check if you have the wrong place. Nope, the sign says it's the workshop. You walk back in and stand nervously. Suddenly a person comes in - could be a bus driver, the CEO, a florist, a scientist,... the coach...? She looks at you and says - "hi, just grab a chair from the stack in the corner and sit wherever you like. We'll start the workshop when everyone turns up. Don't know when that might be"

Scenario 2:
You rock up at the venue and there is a nice welcome sign. You knew exactly where to park because the email was clear. You are greeted at the door and welcomed by the coach - showing you where to pour a nice cup of tea, some nice stationery and your seat. You are told to take your time to settle in, and that the workshop will start in 15 minutes. She reads your mind and shows you where the bathroom is and also introduces you to other participants as you take in the space. The workshop starts 15 minutes later and you are welcomed once again and given clear guidelines about how the day will unfold, and if at any time you are feeling unsure or have questions - to approach her at set times.

How do these 2 scenarios feel in your body? Does the first one instil nervousness and confusion? Do you want to stay or run? Does the 2nd one give you a sense of assurance and safety? Do you look forward to being in the space to learn? Do you feel seen and looked after?

A coaching container is like the 2nd scenario. It is so important for a safe space to be created with clear guidelines and a sense of knowing how the session will unfold. It helps to answer any questions your mind has so that you can drop into the experience. It also sets boundaries for everyone, so that you all know what is acceptable/borderline.

This, is a great container.

This, is what you should look for in a coach / facilitator / space holder.

What's been your experience of a container?
